Cleansing – Beneficial or not and how often?
On talk shows and in magazines, we get inundated with stars championing cleanses. These detox diets they promote promise to help you shed 20 pounds in two weeks. Unfortunately, rapid weight loss can deprive your body of crucial nutrients and calories, forcing your body into starvation mode. Sure, you might lose weight, but your metabolism also slows to compensate and those pounds eventually creep back. The “cleansing” they refer to and the “cleansing “I believe in are two very different things.
When I say, “cleanse,” I mean it in the sense of true cleaning—a strategy that helps your body rid itself of toxins. We’re exposed to harmful substances all the time; they’re in our diet (pesticides, microbes, and mercury…) and in the air we breathe (think disinfectants, deodorizers, and the gasses released by fresh paint). Fortunately, our bodies have an excellent filtering system in place. Enzymes throughout our bodies are continuously breaking down these harmful toxins and helping to flush them out. My 21-day detox works by optimizing that system. It involves eating whole foods that are packed with nutrients believed to boost the activity of the enzymes and nourish the body’s most important detoxifying organs—the liver, the lungs, the kidneys, and the colon—so they can do their jobs better and more efficiently.
The first time I did this cleanse, I noticed that its effects aren’t just physical. I believe there is a spiritual aspect as well. Afterward I felt a sense of peace that I didn’t have before. If you’d like to see for yourself, eat according to my meal plan for 21 days. (If you’re on regular medication, check with your doctor first.) I recommend repeating the cleanse 1-2 times a year, or whenever you’re feeling bloated or sluggish. I promise it will rejuvenate you—from the inside out. You’ll feel less bloated, more energized, have better sleep and… you might shed a few pounds in the process! Regardless, you will be a better, cleaner YOU.

2-3x per day as breakfast and in between meals, mid morning and mid afternoon
- 2 scoops SP Complete, 2 scoops Whey Pro Complete and 1 scoop Whole Food Fiber
- 1 cup water or organic almond milk
- Dash of stevia
- Dash of cinnamon
- Hand full of ice
- ½ cup berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, etc.)
- Only use berries in first two shakes. Do not use in the evening.
Eat fresh, raw organic fruits and vegetables, particularly green, leafy vegetables. Red, yellow and green peppers along with mixed greens, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, yellow and green squash, etc. can be added to your salads. Salads can have unlimited fresh vegetables. No store bought salad dressing (use olive oil, lemon juice/lime juice, salt and pepper instead), nuts, beans or seeds.
Steamed vegetables are recommended along with your salad at dinner.
- Kale, broccoli, swiss chard, brussel sprouts, asparagus, cabbage and onions should be steamed for 4 minutes
- Red beets/yams should be steamed for 25 minutes
1-2 eggs per day if desired, simply prepared – scrambled, boiled, poached, etc. (best used as a snack)
1-2 servings of brown or wild rice (not instant) or lentils per day (1 serving = ½ cup)
No meat for first 10 days. Days 11-21, you can add 3-4 oz. of fish or poultry twice daily.
Water: #ounces = ½ your body weight. (i.e. 120 lbs. = 6-oz H2O)
Regular exercise throughout your 21-day cleanse is recommended for purification and weight loss. Maintaining at least 30 minutes of daily cardio and/or weight training will keep you cleansing. The use of steam rooms and saunas is fine. Never let yourself feel dizzy or lightheaded.
